The Air Force ROTC unit at Oregon State University was established in 1949. The goal of the Apollo Project at Oregon State University was to construct a three-man space simulator and train a crew for a final 48-hour simulated flight. Zimmerman was notified by Frank Knox, then secretary of the Navy, that the University of New Mexico would house a unit of the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps. The University of New Mexico was established by the Legislative Assembly of the Territory of New Mexico in 1889. It was to be located in Albuquerque. Elias Stover was appointed the first president. The new institution opened in rented rooms as a summer normal school, June 15, 1892, beginning regular instruction on September 21st in the first building erected on the campus.
